Sonarr – How to add good Public Indexers

Sonarr is a great tool to download and manage your TV Shows.
https://sonarr.tv/

Earlier it was called NZBDrone and it had a great support for NZBs.
Now it also has a very good support for torrents.
But unfortunately it has very few public indexers by default.

So to get the best possible free public indexers you can use another tool called Jackett.
You can get the latest version here:
https://github.com/Jackett/Jackett/releases
It’s best to download the installer: “Jackett.Installer.Windows.exe” and install it directly.

Jackett:
Once you have jackett installed just open it’s Web UI.
By default it is here:
http://127.0.0.1:9117/Admin/Dashboard

At the very top right you will see your API key which is important to set it up in Sonarr.
Click on the “Add Indexer” button.

Here you’ll see a large list of trackers, both public and private. At the time of writing this post Jackett has about 170 trackers.
Click on the Type header twice and it will sort the list to show you all the public trackers on the top.

Note that the green lock symbol means a public tracker and the red lock means private.
Orange is semi-private.

Now one by one keep adding your favorite public trackers by clicking on the plus ‘+’ icon.

Here’s my list with some private trackers but mostly public trackers.

Once you have a good enough list, it’s time to configure Sonarr with all these trackers.

Sonarr:
Let’s try adding the public Tracker KickassTorrents (KAT)

In Sonarr go to Settings -> Indexers

Click on the Add icon (+ icon)

Then in torrents section click on Torznab:

Go to Jackett and click on “Copy Torznab” button for KickassTorrents:

Come back to Sonarr and paste the URL you just copied in the URL textbox:

And copy the API key in Jackett (remember top right corner) in the API textbox in Sonarr.
Click on Test button to test your settings and finally click Save. And that’s it. Indexer added.

Remember, having several good public trackers will increase your chances at getting the episodes you want.
So add plenty 🙂

  1. Arh man, I’ve just followed this guide and can’t get Jackett to work. I’m running my Plex/Transmission/Sonarr on a Mac Mini, which is not able to go beyond 10.11.6

I’m ver y much out of my comfort zone with Terminal, in totally unknown uncharted waters with Github!

Can anyone advise on how best to get Jackett (or similar – tried Cardigann but that’s kinda broken and isn’t being supported any more) up and running on an Early 2009 Mac Mini?

  2. adding indexers like that defeats the purpose for jackett. the purpose is to setup your search clients with one indexer, and in turn the indexer manages and searches all the torrent sites for more results. so you add all the sites you want on the jackett web client. go to your client i.e sonarr, lidarr, radarr.
and you configure the client as follow: URL: http://localhost:9117/torznab/all/ api key:(the api key for your jackett server),test and save.
that way your client is configured with only one indexer, and jackett does all your searches for you through all of the sites that’s configured on it.

    1. Thanks so much. It works. But for some private trackers I like RSS off and only search On. And for all public I want both RSS and search On. So I’m still trying to find a way to separate it like that. But this is good method for someone who wants all trackers together.

    2. It should be noted, this method will not support tracker error reporting. It’s often helpful to see that a tracker is having issues through the Sonar / Radar web gui.

  4. An outstanding share! I’ve just forwarded this onto a colleague who has been conducting a little homework on this.
And he actually bought me lunch because I discovered it for him…
lol. So let me reword this…. Thanks for the meal!!

But yeah, thanx for spending some time to talk about this topic here on your
    web page.
